This ensures that the container is handled and secured for departure by qualified depot personnel.
Mandatory Transport Vehicle Specifications
To ensure the safety and compliance of the loading process, the transport vehicle utilized must meet stringent specifications:
- Required Vehicle Type: Container loading is exclusively possible onto a semi-trailer specifically designed and adapted for transporting shipping containers.
- Twistlock Requirement: The trailer must be correctly equipped with Twistlock locking mechanisms. These specialized fittings are standard equipment globally for securely locking the container to the chassis.
- Buyer Responsibility: If the buyer arranges their own transport, the chosen carrier must adhere to these international standards. Failure to comply with these rules may result in the inability to safely load the container at the depot.
The Loading Procedure: A Step-by-Step Overview
The loading of a shipping container is a specialized, multi-step process conducted using dedicated handling equipment (e.g., container cranes or reach stackers) and skilled professionals.
- Container Preparation: The container is checked for readiness, and any potential internal or external obstacles are removed.
- Trailer Preparation & Positioning:
- The semi-trailer is thoroughly inspected to ensure it is in sound technical condition and possesses the adequate load capacity for the container type.
- The trailer is precisely positioned beneath the crane or handling equipment.
- Lifting and Placement: The container is carefully lifted and precisely lowered onto the prepared semi-trailer’s chassis.
- Container Securing (Locking):
- Once properly seated, the container is locked to the trailer.
- This is achieved by engaging the Twistlocks located on the trailer chassis into the corresponding corner holes (castings) of the container. This action firmly secures the container and prevents any movement.
- Final Security Verification: A mandatory final check is conducted by depot staff to confirm that the container is correctly seated, firmly locked, and securely affixed to the trailer, ensuring maximum stability for the impending journey.
